Entropy is defined as the randomness or disorder of a system. Chaos, in other words. In chemistry, one tenet we learn early on is that spontaneous transformations--i.e., change--will often proceed towards entropy. Left unchecked, any system will devolve into disorder over time. The universe itself, as it expands, tends to move towards entropy, towards chaos. This constant movement and expansion makes all the molecules around us diffuse and spread out, increasing the chaos around us. I wanted to depict this movement towards chaos in this painting. As the different colored alcohol inks are added to the canvas in droplets, they blend and bleed into each other, diffusing around and through each other. This is chaos, or entropy. But through the center of this cloud of chaos, I also added droplets of gold. Though heavier, it also followed the dispersion of the inks surrounding it, but it did so at a much slower rate. Because of this, there is a golden river or vein through the chaos of the clouds.
